You are an artist, an aesthete, a sensitive, and someone who has never really let go of that childlike innocence. To you, all of life has a sense of wonder in it, and the story of Orpheus was written about someone just like you.

When the Argo passed the island of the Sirens, Orpheus played a song more beautiful than the Sirens to prevent the crew from becoming enticed. When his wife died, he ventured into the underworld to charm Hades but, in his naivete, he looked back becoming trapped there.

You can capture your unique world view and relate it to others with the skill of a master storyteller. Your sensitivity and creativity make you a treasure to the human race, but your thin-skinned nature and innocence can cause you a lot of disenchantment and pain. What's doubly unfortunate is that, if you try to lose those traits, you never will, and everyone will be able to tell that you're putting up an artificial shell to prevent yourself from being hurt.

Famous people like you: Hemingway, Shakespeare, Mr. Rogers, Melville, Nick Tosches
Stay clear of: Icarus, Hermes, Atlas

Virtue - Water people exhibit benevolence. These type people are charitable, have a kindly disposition and promote goodwill. They are concerned with the welfare of others. Where other people are concerned they are kind, generous and philanthropic. They seldom harbor hostility. They derive pleasure from doing good deeds.

Core - They are cooperative, companionable, hospitable and socialable. They are true humanitarians and are concerned with the welfare of other people. They are called servants or servers because of their unselfishness and sincere devotion to the welfare of humanity. They unconditionally come to the aid of the sick and the unfortunate just as they would for one of their own family, and most often ask nothing in return.

Nature - They have strong feelings and sensibilities. They tend to make decisions based on their emotions rather than by reason. Although they are emotional in nature, they do not outwardly express it. Their feelings are hurt easily but they tend to not let it show.

Drives - They are deeply concerned about the welfare of their friends and family. They also care about what other people think and say about them. An insensitive remark from someone can hurt their feelings deeply, although they may not show it. They give of themselves and their material possessions freely to help a less-advantaged person gain confidence and stature. They will go all out where close friends or family is concerned. It is not easy to make friends with a them because they are skeptical and naturally shy. They will be generous and kind to a certain point, but when you gain their confidence you will have an all-weather friend who will stand by you through your struggles.

Vice - They will suppress the truth by words, writing and conduct to do damage to another. This is not spite. This is their non-violent way of getting their revenge. Milder cases include stretching the truth a little, not exactly untrue but not the real truth. They are emotional people and tend to get carried away in the heat of a situation. These people are not prone to physical violence normally, but being of an emotional nature and having the tendency to let things build up inside them, they can become extremely abusive.

The following is a very interesting perspective about our "Drive by Media."
Victor Davis Hanson is a professor at Fresno State.

August 3, 2006

Eye of the Beholder by Victor Davis Hanson

The American Enterprise Online

War-torn Iraq has about 26 million residents, a peaceful California perhaps
now 35 million. The former is a violent and impoverished landscape, the
latter said to be paradise on Earth. But how you envision either place to some
degree depends on the eye of the beholder and is predicated on what the daily
media appear to make of each.

As a fifth-generation Californian, I deeply love this state, but still
imagine what the reaction would be if the world awoke each morning to be told that
once again there were six more murders, 27 rapes, 38 arsons, 180 robberies,
and 360 instances of assault in California - yesterday, today, tomorrow, and
every day. I wonder if the headlines would scream about "Nearly 200 poor
Californians butchered again this month!"

How about a monthly media dose of "600 women raped in February alone!" Or
try, "Over 600 violent robberies and assaults in March, with no end in sight!"
Those do not even make up all of the state's yearly 200,000 violent acts that
law enforcement knows about.

Iraq's judicial system seems a mess. On the eve of the war, Saddam let out
100,000 inmates from his vast prison archipelago. He himself still sits in the
dock months after his trial began. But imagine an Iraq with a penal system
like California's with 170,000 criminals - an inmate population larger than
those of Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Singapore combined.

Just to house such a shadow population costs our state nearly $7 billion a
year - or about the same price of keeping 40,000 Army personnel per year in
Iraq. What would be the image of our Golden State if we were reminded each
morning, "Another $20 million spent today on housing our criminals"?

Some of California's most recent prison scandals would be easy to
sensationalize: "Guards watch as inmates are raped!" Or "Correction officer accused of
having sex with under-aged detainee!" And apropos of Saddam's sluggish trial,
remember that our home state multiple murderer, Tookie Williams, was finally
executed in December 2005 - 26 years after he was originally sentenced.

Much is made of the inability to patrol Iraq's borders with Iran, Jordan,
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Turkey. But California has only a single
border with a foreign nation, not six. Yet over 3 million foreigners who
sneaked in illegally now live in our state. Worse, there are about 15,000 convicted
alien felons incarcerated in our penal system, costing about $500 million a
year. Imagine the potential tabloid headlines: "Illegal aliens in state
comprise population larger than San Francisco!" or "Drugs, criminals, and
smugglers given free pass into California!"

Every year, over 4,000 Californians die in car crashes - nearly twice the
number of Americans lost so far in three years of combat operations in Iraq. In
some sense, then, our badly maintained roads, and often poorly trained and
sometimes intoxicated drivers, are even more lethal than Improvised Explosive
Devices. Perhaps tomorrow's headline might scream out at us: "300
Californians to perish this month on state highways! Hundreds more will be maimed and
crippled!"

In 2001, California had 32 days of power outages, despite paying nearly the
highest rates for electricity in the United States. Before complaining about
the smoke in Baghdad rising from private generators, think back to the run on
generators in California when they were contemplated as a future part of
every household's line of defense.

We're told that Iraq's finances are a mess. Yet until recently, so were
California's. Two years ago, Governor Schwarzenegger inherited a $38 billion
annual budget shortfall. That could have made for strong morning newscast
teasers: "Another $100 million borrowed today - $3 billion more in red ink to pile
up by month's end!"

So is California comparable to Iraq? Hardly. Yet it could easily be sketched
by a reporter intent on doing so as a bankrupt, crime-ridden den with
murderous highways, tens of thousands of inmates, with wide-open borders.

I myself recently returned home to California, without incident, from a
visit to Iraq's notorious Sunni Triangle. While I was gone, a drug-addicted
criminal with a long list of convictions broke into our kitchen at 4 a.m., was
surprised by my wife and daughter, and fled with our credit cards, cash, keys,
and cell phones.

Sometimes I wonder who really was safer that week.

(c)2006 Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson is a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford
University, a Professor Emeritus at California University, Fresno, and a
nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services.

He was a full-time farmer before joining California State University, Fresno,
in 1984 to initiate a classics program. In 1991, he was awarded an
American Philological Association Excellence in Teaching Award, which is given
yearly to the country's top undergraduate teachers of Greek and Latin.

Hanson was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow at the Center for
Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California (1992-93),
a visiting professor of classics at Stanford University (1991-92), a recipient of the Eric Breindel Award for opinion journalism(2002), and an Alexander Onassis Fellow (2001) and was named alumnus of the year of the University of California, Santa Cruz (2002). He was also the visiting Shifrin Chair of Military History at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland (2002-03).

The Cracked Pot

Some of you may have seen this before. It's one of those things, though, that I think is worth re-reading, and reminding ourselves of once in a while. :)

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."
The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them."
"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.
So, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!

NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION

The following has been attributed to State Representative Mitchell Aye from GA. This guy should run for President one day...

"We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other bed-wetters. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights."

ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This Country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from!

ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all;
with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!!!!

If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you don't. I just think it's about time common sense is allowed to flourish. Sensible people of the United States speak out because if you do not, who will?

From now on I will discuss the weather, food, critters, and other subjects over which there can be little controversy beyond the benign sort. Due to a lack of willingness on the part of some to actually discuss things, and be willing to trade ideas and opinions openly and honestly, without my having to read about how awful it was later, I think that, in the long run, this option would be best for all concerned. If I want discussion, I'll just talk to my husband.

So, how's the weather? What's for dinner? Did I mention the cat threw up a hairball on my new carpet?

My cousin sent me this. It had so much truth in it I had to share it. Feel free to share it with all your "aging" friends :).

The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction, she was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would ponder it, and let her know.

Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m. and sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.

Author Unknown

Sometimes thinking gets me in trouble ...

In February my favorite cousin, aged 50, died in a car accident. He hit a patch of ice and couldn't stop at a stop sign, slid under a truck and was killed instantly. I was seriously bummed, as might be expected.

This afternoon, I found out that last saturday someone I hadn't seen in a while, but whom I was very fond of, aged 50, died. Barring toxicology results to the contrary, she apparently died in her sleep.

I'm 50. I'll be 51 soon enough, I hope. But I have to admit, the swiftness and suddenness of things has given me much pause to think. So, friends. If I'm a little pensive, more thoughtful than normal -- maybe a bit preoccupied, it's nothing personal. Just have a lot to think about these days.

In Celtic astrology, you're a Holly. The animal symbol that accompanies this tree is the unicorn. However, Hollies may be prone to perfectionism, loss of direction and possessiveness, especially toward people.

The Vine

75%

The Holly

75%

The Hawthorn

75%

The Hazel

70%

The Oak

70%

The Rowan

65%

The Ash

65%

The Ivy

65%

The Elder

65%

The Reed

50%

The Alder

45%

The Birch

40%

The Willow

35%

</td>

What Tree Are You? Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Take the quiz

As tagged by Sapharin

5 Things in my freezer
1. Telepathy is the ability to read or pick up on the thoughts of another person. Telepathy is one of the more common experiences people have of psychic ability. Most people can recall an instance where they have known who was calling before picking up the phone. So what is the difference between imagination and good guessing skills and telepathy? Telepathy tends to work best where it involves the transference of emotions, particularly strong ones rather than thoughts. It also tends to happen at the same time or just before the thoughts are spoken. As psychic skills progress the ability to read the thoughts and emotions of others increases.

However, telepathy should not be confused with wishful thinking and the imagination. Telepathy is not an imaginary message about for instance calling someone who in actual fact, you just want to call them. Telepathy is often confused with wishful thinking in the case of a new romantic liaison where you hope the person wants a call rather than you receiving their thoughts. Telepathic skills are neutral, they are the ability to observe the thoughts of others and interpret them correctly. Some people do not realise they have the ability to do this. It can often be seen where your mood unusually changes around certain people. This can be because you are unconsciously receiving their thoughts.

Empathy is the ability to pick up on the feelings of others rather than their thoughts. This is something that is common among those who are psychically sensitive 'feeling' people. 'Feeling' people are those who communicate well through such things as hugging and kindness. In some cases such psychics are attracted to the healing professions. They just 'know' when a person is not feeling on top of the world and set out to help them. However, with such a skill it is often the case these people find it difficult to define boundaries and allow for unsavoury characters to persist in their life. If you have a strong skill in this area it is sensible to work heavily on your spiritual development so your self-esteem is very strong in order to avoid overload.

Clairvoyance/Remote Viewing
Clairvoyance is the ability to see images of an event(s) that have occurred in the past, present or future. This type of 'seeing' does not occur with your physical sight it occurs with an inner sight. Sometimes these images will be a literal translation other times they are symbolic. It is necessary to develop this skill further in order to more accurately determine if an image is literal or symbolic. The 'third eye' (chakra at the centre of the forehead) is associated with being the seat of clairvoyance. When the third eye is developing and stretching to open up to clairvoyant skills it can give off a tight feeling in the centre of your forehead, a desire to rub it or a constant irritation with your hair if it covers it.

Psychokinesis
Psychokinesis is the ability to move objects with the power of the mind. This more unusual psychic skill has been made famous by the idea of poltergeists. Apparent poltergeists are often in the home of children or young adults. But poltergeist activity can often be explained by unconscious psychokinesis by children or young adults. Such youngsters going through either an emotionally intense time or puberty (an emotionally intense time) create extra psychic energy. This extra psychic energy without them realising it, can move objects. It is also something that occurs in adults who are likewise, going through an emotionally intense time or their psychic energy is building to develop their psychic skills. Light bulbs will ping, electrical items will turn themselves on or break with no apparent reason. This can happen until the psychic skills of such a person are acknowledged and developed.

Precognition
While clairvoyance and telepathy have to do with perceiving events across distance precognition focuses on the ability to 'see' events across time. Specifically future events. Precognition is often for a lot of people totally unexpected and not asked for. It is the ability to see the future. It is usually experienced in a variety of ways among the most common are through feelings, brief inner glimpses, dreams and the third eye (the minds eye). For some, especially if not understood, this ability can be disconcerting until the gift is properly managed. This can be done through reading, experiencing and understanding psychic ability.

Channeling
Those who communicate with spirits are called a channeler or medium. Channelling is the ability to communicate with those who once lived or with spirit who have never taken a human form such as angelic beings. Channeling is the communication that takes place between a spirit and a living human. There are several forms of spirit communication and a channeler does not have to be in a trance state to receive messages. However, with regard to the quality of channelled information it is reliant on the channeler rather than the spirit. This is because the information has to be passed in an energy form for interpretation from the channeler. If the channeler has not learnt the skill adequately the information can seem vague and jumbled. Channeling can be a learned skill. As you learn though, it is important to remember that everyone has a different experience of what it is like to channel. Your style will depend on your spirit guide and your particular energy level, focus, and clarity. Before consciously channelling it is a good idea to learn the skills of quietening the mind. This is to ensure the quality of information you receive. Many people however, experience 'unconscious' channelling a random act of communication with a loved one who has passed over. This means a person has the ability to successfully channel but has not yet developed it.

Now get yourself a shrink, quick!
51-70: When it comes to understanding human emotions, you'd have better luck understanding Chinese.
71-90: You've got more emotional intelligence than the average frat boy. Barely.
91-110: You're average. It's easy to predict how you'll react to things. But anyone could have guessed that.
111-130: You usually have it going on emotionally, but roadblocks tend to land you on your butt.
131-150: You are remarkable when it comes to relating with others. Only the biggest losers get under your skin.
150+: Two possibilities - you've either out "Dr. Phil-ed" Dr. Phil... or you're a dirty liar.

What's Your EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient)?

Hm ... could be.

You scored as Original Hippie. Yup. You're a hippie. You were among those to start the phase. And you're still at it. There's a good chance that meditation, music, art, and pot have always been important to you. A lot of other people in the world look up to you, because you're just cool. You stand up for what you believe in and are really trying to bring peace into this world one bellybutton at a time! Peace!

One Intelectual Individual

75%

Original Hippie

75%

New Age Hippie

50%

Earth-Child

50%

Not a Hippie

38%

Pothead

25%

</td>

What type of hippie are you?
created with QuizFarm.com

Hm ... yeah ... pretty accurate.

Your Hidden Talent

You have the power to persuade and influence others.
You're the type of person who can turn a whole room around.
The potential for great leadership is there, as long as you don't abuse it.
Always remember, you have a lot more power over people than you might think!

What's Your Hidden Talent?

Yikes! ...
